Scientific Service Units

The Scientific Service Units (SSUs) are facilities which pool scientific infrastructure used by more than one research group to avoid a duplication of efforts and expenses. Their cutting-edge equipment and expert services allow scientists to perform research at an internationally competitive level.

• All SSUs make use of the same online booking systemPPMS
• Please find some tips and tricks here: Booking system (PPMS)

There are the following service units on campus, the most important for physicists mentioned first. Click on the title of each to jump to a longer description.

Nanofabrication Facility (NFF)

The NFF provides ISTA researchers with tools to fabricate and characterize semiconductor, optomechanical and microfluidic devices. An introductory training for the different tools there is mandatory and can be booked via PPMS. The cleanrooms are located in Lab Building West (I21).

Machine Shop

We provide special mechanical an electronic equipment for all experimentalists. We are able to design and produce systems, components or electrical devices according to the needs of your research. Furthermore, we do repair or modify existing lab equipment.

Imaging and Optics Facility

The Imaging and Optics Facility is distributed over different buildings on the ISTA Campus. The central ISTA reception is located in the 2nd Administration Building (i07). The Facility offices are located in i04.EG.037 and i06.EG.108 (building.floor.room).

All new users of the Imaging and Optics facility need to complete the “intro to newcomers”, before any facility equipment can be used. You can only request an “intro to newcomers” via online booking system: here.
The Imaging and Optics Facility team provides different workshops and courses, next-to-system training, demonstrations and invited seminars.

> no upcoming events for 2022 yet

Library

The library offers support in the areas of publishing and communicating scientific results. Researchers can learn about Open Access, Research Data Management Plans, IST Austria Research Explorer and Author Identifier.

The physical library offers a quiet place to learn and study. Additionally, the library provides useful information on citation management software, which can be especially useful when finishing a thesis.

Library online services are also accessible from your home office.

Electron Microscopy Facility

TRAININGS: Before anyone can use the electron microscopes or lab equipments, a successful completed training from the EMF members is required. During these trainings, you will also be instructed with our safety and booking rules.

TO GET A TRAINING: Internal Users need to contact us first with a description of their project and what they want to accomplish. After a project meeting, a cooperation agreement form has to be filled out incl. cost center and signature of the PI.

Scientific Computing

This scientific service unit is responsible for providing resources for scientific computing (computing cluster, scientific software).

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Facility

The NMR Facility supports chemists and biochemists by providing access to state-of-the-art high resolution NMR spectrometers. Currently we have one 600 MHz Avance IV NMR spectrometer equipped with a solution-state broad-band TBO probe.

All users need to participate in compulsory safety training before entering the NMR hall. Basic or advanced user trainings should be taken before the use of any equipment for the first time. The users should succeed in an on-site practical exam before getting access to the equipment of the Facility. Contact us at nmr@ist.ac.at.

Lab Support Facility (LSF)

LSF consists of the following facilities:

• Aquatics (Fish Facility and Frog Facility)
• Plant Facility
• Mass Spectrometry
• Molecular Biology
• Media Kitchen

Services and consumables as well as trainings and equipment can be booked via the PPMS system!

Preclinical Facility

The Preclinical Facility team provides laboratory animals / rodents to experimental research groups on the campus. They breed laboratory rats and mice, deliver animals on a daily base, do genotyping of transgenic mouse and give support with veterinarian-related topics and administrative issues.
